Teaching Creation

to design and develop new ideas, concepts and products

One of the most inspirational quotes for my classroom on creativity is from Sir Ken Robinson. He says that “Creativity is as important as literacy.” But what is creativity and as teachers, how do we develop the skills needed to produce creative outcomes in our student’s work?

Educational theorists Feldhusen and Treffinger (1980) offered various recommendations for establishing a classroom environment conducive to creative thinking. Thirty years on with the advent of online tools and social media, many of these guidelines support and reinforce digital pedagogy.

Some key points from our classroom on creativity and digital pedagogy.

1. Support and reinforce new ideas and the response of the students.
(Using forums and new digital tools enables this.)
2. Use failure as a positive to help students realize errors and meet acceptable standards in a supportive atmosphere

So happy =)
(Digital tools and online communication does not always run smoothly – but students and teachers learn from these challenges)
3. Adapt to student interests and ideas in class
(Web 2.0 tools in the classroom make this very easy to do so)
4. Allow time for students to think about and develop their creative ideas. Not all creativity occurs immediately and spontaneously.
(Learning Management Systems and other Web 2.0 tools allow for this process to unfold)
5. Create a climate of mutual respect and acceptance between students and between students
( Online community building today also requires this creation of trust )
